Based upon what I've observed and read in other sources, the oval (P) proof mark was not released until 1908. Prior to that Hunting gear point, Winchester marked “OF” (outside the house equipped) on the bottom in the barrel beneath the forend stock for the mail order barrels. I've see various of them on Model 1885 One Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
